Members of the small and isolated Jewish community of Slutsk, Belarus, congregated in their small basement community space in their full fancy dress as they celebrated the festival of Purim, read the story of Esther, and enjoyed delicious poppy seed filled hamantaschen.
In a country where there is no Judaica or easy access to kosher food, how was this possible? They themselves gave a recipe to their local shop and asked them to bake for the occasion. The results were superb. This small Jewish community has very limited resources, but we are helping them to take new steps towards growth. Currently we are preparing, through distance learning, one of their youth to become Bar Mitzvah in July. As well as this, a cohort of their young adults will be participating in our summer programme in Minsk this year. Change is gradual, and takes time and patience, but we are starting to see some exciting progress.
