The Forgotten Holocaust
‘As part of the Newcastle City Council Holocaust Memorial Day programme on the ‘Fragility of Freedom’
This event is in partnership with ROMA ACCESS, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
The Nazis viewed Romani peoples as radically inferior and as social outsiders. During World War II, the Nazis and their allies and collaborators perpetrated a genocide of European Roma. They shot tens of thousands of Romani people in occupied eastern Poland, the Soviet Union, and Serbia. They also murdered thousands more Roma from western and central Europe in killing centers.
This special event will shine a light on this little known history, the importance of cultural identity and the fragility of freedom for the minority groups whose stories are yet to be told.
Join us with special guest speakers, a Q&A session and a tour of a pop-up display about the Roma during World War II.
