Five years ago, The Together Plan exposed the story of the lost Jewish cemetery in Brest-Litovsk and the headstones that were removed by the Soviets to be used as building materials, a decade after the Nazis had reduced the Jewish community from 26,000 to 11.
Back then The Together Plan raised the funds to move the headstones and have them secured to protect them from vandals – watch the film. In the last 5 years, the headstones were relocated again, and are now in storage under the care of the Brest municipality. We are now running a campaign to build a memorial wall with these headstones to remember and honour the lost community. This memorial will play a central role in the story of the Jews of Brest-Litovsk which will feature as part of our Jewish heritage trail now under development. Last week our Belarus Country Director, Artur Livshyts, travelled to Brest to meet with the Mayor to discuss developments for the building of the proposed memorial once the funds have been raised. The meeting was positive and we are delighted to say that the Brest authorities are fully committed to this project.
